HISTORY

William Morris (1834–1896) was the towering figure in late 19th-century design and the main influence on the Arts and Crafts movement.

Morris began experimenting with various crafts and designing furniture and interiors. He was personally involved in manufacture as well as design, which was the hallmark of the Arts and Crafts movement.

 Arts & Crafts Movement

Morris founded his firm Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Coin 1861 with Burne-Jones, Rossetti, Webb, and others. They were a group of like-minded artists and craftsmen responding to the shoddy practises of much of the Victorian manufacturing. In 1875, Morris then took control of the company and Morris & Co. was born. They became best-known for their wallpaper and fabric designs.

1862

The first paper Morris designed was 'Trellis' in 1862, a pattern suggested by the rose trellis in the garden of Red House, Morris's home in Kent; the second was 'Daisy' (1864), a simple design of naively drawn meadow flowers.

Sanderson Design Group

In 1940 they went into liquidation but their archive was bought by another British heritage brand, Arthur Sanderson & Sons. These designs have been re-printed, re-imagined, re-coloured, and often built on and around ever since.
